Music Machines |
| This program places
Craft, Design and Technoloy in its context and shows it relevance
to life, work and leisure. We talk to young students of the subject
and also to established designers. |
| 2.
Machines Make Work |
| The program uses the
example of a construction excavator to illustrate the principles of
mechanisms. It then shows simpler applications of levers, linkages,
pulleys and gears to everyday activities. |
| 3.
Built To Last |
| Scaffolding is used
to demonstrate the simple prindple of a structure built to resist
force. We look at the work of entrants in a competition to design
and build a rubber raft. |
| 4.
Time |
| This film looks at the
measurement and mechanism of time. It was written by a "Dial
Designer," and made at the Royal Observator at Greenwich and
in a clock making factory in England. |
| 5.
Mechanical Toys |
| The history of mechanical
toys dates back to the Ancient Egyptians, but only in the 19th century
did mass pro-duction techniques make them widely available. The pm
mm I ooks at the mechanisms which make them wor and shows stages in
the construction of an inge-nious mechanical toy. |
| 6.
Leonardo |
| This pro ram was filmed
in Dover Castle and discusses some a the ideas of Leonardo da Vinci
in dealing with fortification andwea ons of war. It also shows how
he observed fIight and how he tried to solve some of the practical
problems of the 5th century. |
| 7.
Energy |
| Energy, what it is and
how to control it, is crucial all Design and Technology work as well
as life outside the classroom. School visits were made to see simple
and cheap materials like rubber bands and soft drink cans used to
demonstrate ideas on energy, its storage and control. A second example
involved a windmill project for which students design sails to produce
electricity. Following those experiences, the chidren tried to design
the most efficient wind generator. |

Using Energy |
| We examine industrial
methods of converting and using energy and the program ends with sequences
showing the use of wind and wave power. |
